“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the equipment of the gospel of peace; besides all these, taking the shield of faith, with which you can quench all the flaming darts of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.”
Ephesians 6:10-18
Men,
The Armor of God is a powerful metaphor that Saint Paul uses in his letter to the Ephesians to describe the spiritual battle that we face as Christians. In this passage, Paul urges us to put on the whole armor of God, so that we may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.
Let's take a closer look at each piece of armor and what it represents:
The belt of truth: This represents the importance of living a life of honesty and integrity, rooted in the truth of God's word.
The breastplate of righteousness: This represents the need to live a life of moral purity, putting on the righteousness of Christ through faith and obedience.
The shoes of the gospel of peace: This represents the need to be ready and willing to share the good news of salvation with others, no matter where we go.
The shield of faith: This represents the importance of having faith in God's promises, even when we face trials and temptations.
The helmet of salvation: This represents the need to protect our minds from the lies and deceptions of the enemy, by focusing on the truth of our salvation in Christ.
The sword of the Spirit: This represents the power of God's word, which is our ultimate weapon in the spiritual battle.
Putting on the whole armor of God is not a one-time event, but a daily choice to live in obedience to God's word and to resist the temptations of the enemy. As Christians, we are called to be vigilant in our faith, always seeking to grow in holiness and to live out our mission to bring others to Christ.
So let us take up the Armor of God and stand firm in our faith, knowing that with God's help, we can overcome any obstacle and emerge victorious in the spiritual battle!
militia est vita hominis super terram, et sicut dies mercenarii dies ejus.
I wrote a series on this. It surprised me that Paul drew many of this elements from Isaiah. 🤔
