For those who know me, you know that I am in IT for a living. I often have to teeter between the ancient tenants of my Catholic faith while painstakingly keeping up with the next new thing in technology. Today, I found a rare silver lining. I stumbled upon ChatGPT. ChatGPT is an AI writing assistant that answers follow-up questions, admits its mistakes, challenges incorrect premises, and rejects inappropriate requests. While playing around with it, I asked the AI to write an article on Catholic Masculinity.
I thought it intriguing enough to share and have placed it below. I firmly believe that technology is a tool to make our lives better and to be used prudently, like many things, being careful not to abuse. Today, I have put that tool to good use to spread the Good News and build up Catholic Men.
In today's society, the concept of masculinity is often associated with traits such as strength, aggression, and a lack of emotion. However, for Catholic men, true masculinity is rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ and the virtues of compassion, humility, and self-control.
As Catholic men, we are called to be leaders in our families, communities, and church. This does not mean dominating or controlling others, but rather serving and protecting those around us. We are called to be strong, but not in a physical sense, but rather in our faith and in our commitment to living a life of virtue.
In his letter to the Ephesians, St. Paul reminds us that "be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might" (Ephesians 6:10). This strength is not to be used for our own gain or to assert our power over others, but rather to defend the weak and the vulnerable.
In addition to strength, Catholic masculinity also involves the virtue of humility. As men, we are not meant to be boastful or arrogant, but rather humble and self-aware. We must recognize our own limitations and weaknesses, and strive to constantly improve ourselves through prayer, self-reflection, and service to others.
Self-control is another important aspect of Catholic masculinity. In a world that often glorifies excessive drinking, promiscuity, and aggression, it is crucial for Catholic men to exhibit self-control and restraint in our actions and thoughts. We must strive to live in a way that is in line with the teachings of Christ and the virtues of the Catholic faith.
In conclusion, Catholic masculinity is not defined by societal norms or stereotypes, but rather by our commitment to living a life of virtue and service to others. As Catholic men, we are called to be leaders and protectors, but not through aggression or domination. Rather, our strength and leadership comes from our faith and our dedication to living a life of humility, self-control, and compassion.
Yes, I think that is really cool. When I write newsletters the service provides an AI writing assistant, which has really improved my writing .. and my thinking. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing this tool. AI should only ever be a tool. We should never defer decisions to it, and let it be our ‘master’. It can be easily abused by those who control the inputs and therefor manipulate the outputs.
